Award

Katia Lamer receives the 2027 AMS STAC Outstanding Early Career Award

The American Meteorological Society named Katia Lamer — scientist and director of the Center for Multiscale Applied Sensing at Brookhaven National Laboratory — recipient of its 2027 STAC Outstanding Early Career Award, on the recommendation of the AMS Committee on Boundary Layers and Turbulence. The citation honors her “for pioneering mobile multi-sensor observatories and transforming understanding of boundary-layer clouds and turbulence across the urban and natural environments.” She will be recognized at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting in Denver in January 2027.

Honor

Pavlos Kollias elected a 2027 Fellow of the American Meteorological Society

The American Meteorological Society elected Pavlos Kollias a Fellow, naming him among its New AMS Fellows for 2027 in the society's Weather, Water, and Climate honorees announced July 30, 2026. AMS Fellows are elected by the AMS Council for “outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.”

Pavlos Kollias chairs the Quantum Information Science for the Geosciences Workshop at Stony Brook

Researchers from across academia, government and industry gathered at Stony Brook on May 6–7 for the NSF GEO–supported workshop, chaired by Pavlos Kollias, to examine how emerging quantum computing and sensing technologies could transform atmospheric science, oceanography and Earth system modeling.

Workshop

Pavlos Kollias co-chairs the NSF NCAR Radar Technology Community Workshop

Held March 10–12 in Boulder, Colorado, the NSF NCAR-sponsored workshop united scientists and engineers from academia, national laboratories, federal agencies and industry to assess the state of atmospheric radar systems and chart priorities for next-generation ground-based and airborne radar capabilities. Pavlos Kollias served as co-chair of the steering committee.

Mission

WIVERN selected as ESA's 11th Earth Explorer mission

ESA's Member States selected WIVERN — the WInd VElocity Radar Nephoscope — as Earth Explorer 11. Led by Alessandro Battaglia and Pavlos Kollias, the mission carries the first conically scanning 94 GHz Doppler radar with an 800 km swath, delivering the first measurements of winds inside clouds alongside profiles of rain, snow and ice.

Field campaign

MAAS storm operations take connected radars to Huntsville, Alabama

The group deployed its Multisensor Agile Adaptive Sampling framework in the field, coordinating Stony Brook's mobile radar truck with the SKYLER-II and ROARS phased-array radars to adaptively sample fast-evolving storms in real time.

Mission

EarthCARE launches — the group's Cloud Profiling Radar processors go to work

ESA's EarthCARE Earth Explorer reached orbit in May 2024. The group develops and maintains the ESA-side EarthCARE Cloud Profiling Radar Level-2a processors — led from McGill by Bernat Puigdomènech Treserras — turning the satellite's W-band radar into vertical profiles of clouds and precipitation.
